Introducing ‘Mr Mcgregor’s Favourite’

Richard Lucas, our horticultural advisor, is always looking out for special varieties of flowers and vegetables for us to grow, and now he has discovered an old Scottish variety of beetroot.  Mentioned in historic vegetable lists from 1890, ‘Mr McGregor’s Favourite’ was until recently thought to be extinct.

Richard has managed to track down seeds of this rare variety, which is grown both for its deep purple carrot-shaped roots, and it’s tasty dark ruby-red salad leaves.

So this year look out for it in our attraction garden, amongst the other heritage varieties of vegetables and flowers that we grow.
