Happy Christmas from the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction

THE RABBIT’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

A sequence of six paintings was done by Beatrix Potter in the early 1890’s, representing a Rabbit’s Christmas Party. There is no formal story but the scenes show how a group of rabbit’s enjoy a traditional Christmas celebration. Beatrix gave four of the paintings to her aunt, Lucy Roscoe, whose husband, scientist Sir Henry Roscoe, provided Beatrix with valuable help in her natural history studies. However by this time Beatrix had become rather critical of her own work and thus the remaining two paintings, showing the rabbit’s playing blind man’s buff, were gifted to an American boy, Henry P. Coolidge, who visited Beatrix in her Lake District home in 1927. None the less, these pictures are highly recognised as particularly exquisite examples of Beatrix’s artistic work and skill!  We hope you enjoy them.
