Beatrix Potter and the snow

As the weather turns colder and the country welcomes a flurry of snow, we thought it quite apt to share this snow sketch by Beatrix Potter from the V&A archives. Following her purchase of Hill Top Farm in 1905, Beatrix Potter made many studies of the Lake District landscape, especially in all seasons. Beatrix very much enjoyed sketching the outdoors and thought the Lakeland fells ‘even more impressive in mist and snow’. This snow scene of loose watercolour is dated back to November 1910, when Beatrix was staying at Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey. The V&A state that this sketch seems to ‘capture Potter’s immediate surroundings on the farm, including the chickens in the snow.’ For more rare snow filled sketches by the famous author you can view them in the V&A archives.
