A very special birthday cake travels 6000 miles to celebrate Peter Rabbit’s birthday!

From the Lake District to Japan, a very special birthday cake travels 6000 miles to celebrate Peter Rabbit’s birthday!

The Tale of Peter Rabbit, the most loved of all Beatrix Potter’s stories was first published in 1902, and its 120th birthday in 2022 will be celebrated around the world.

In an exciting first, the Setagaya Museum in the city of Tokyo, Japan is preparing to host a very special exhibition dedicated to Peter Rabbit and his 120th anniversary.  For the first time in Japan, a selection of original Beatrix Potter illustrations including watercolours from the famous Tale of Peter Rabbit will be displayed for the public to view from 26 March – 19 June along with other original pieces which celebrate the history of Peter Rabbit from his first creation in the early 1900s to today.

The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction was asked to create a very special birthday cake to feature in the Tokyo exhibition alongside Beatrix Potter’s work.   The cake is a beautiful work of art and was designed and created by the Attraction’s scenic artists and model designers Caroline Dalton, Jerry Hereford and Trevor Fearnley.  The cake sits at almost 2 meters high and has been handcrafted in exquisite detail to reflect the look of the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction and celebrate the Tale of Peter Rabbit with characters and creatures from Beatrix Potter’s famous stories.

For Peter Rabbit fans not able to see the cake in Japan, a replica is being created and will be on show in the Lake District at the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction from Easter onwards.  A version of this jet-setting cake will also feature in a brand new theatre production ‘Happy Birthday Peter Rabbit’ which opens in the Attraction’s Old Laundry Theatre this summer.   In this family-friendly musical adventure, Peter’s friends are planning a secret party, but Peter is unhappy… has no one remembered his birthday?  Mrs Rabbit is baking a delicious Birthday cake but Mr McGregor would rather have a pie full of the rabbit who keeps stealing carrots from his garden!  Visitors to Bowness can join in the fun and celebrate along with Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-duck and other favourite characters who are brought to life in this new production featuring beautifully handcrafted puppets and enchanting original songs.
